My understanding is that Volume Manager (volmgr) is a physical media =
management system, whose facilities netbackup uses. Suspect that two =
different sets of developers build volume manager and netbackup (which =
iirc used to be called 'backup plus' - hence the 'bp' names for all the =
commands). Volume manager is not exclusive to netbackup, I believe it =
is also used by Veritas's HSM product as well.
=20
Volume manager uses 'media id' as the term of reference, hence '-m' when =
using volume manager commands. This would always correspond to the =
external identifier (bar code) on the tape. Volume manager understands =
that a particular tape is 'assigned' to a product (eg in use by =
Netbackup or HSM), but that's about it.
=20
I've only used 3.4.1, but my experience has been that volume manager =
uses 'media id' - hence -m, and netbackup has the concept of the =
external volser (barcode) (hence -ev) and the volser actually on the =
header of the tape (placed there by bplabel).
=20
=20
Just my 2cents

It appears that whenever you are using a command from the */volmgr/bin =
directory you need the -m switch, but when you are using a command from =
netbackup/bin/admicmd directory you need the -ev switch.

One of the many and varied aspects of Netbackup is that their =
command-line switches vary greatly from command to command. Consistency =
was not their strong suit.

Can anyone explain the difference between the -m en -ev parameters when =
using the command prompt? I allways thought that -m was for Master =
Server, but it can also be used for Media ID?
