We manually initiate a d/b cleanup every morning which will
compress the older images as part of the overall cleanup process.

The command we use for the cleanup is :

/usr/openv/netbackup/bin/admincmd/bpimage -cleanup -allclients

There is an option to only compress images - I believe the syntax is :

/usr/openv/netbackup/bin/admincmd/bpimage -compress -allclients

I have never used the -compress option but it should do what you need it to.

BTW, we are running NB3.4_2 on Solaris. We run the cleanup in the
background -
(touch /usr/openv/netbackup/bin/CLEAN_IN_BACKGROUND ).

Does anyone know...

If I modify the "Delay to Compress Database X days" field in the NetBackup
Configuration, is there a command to make NetBackup go through and do its
compressing immediately? I know that eventually it will decide to go
through the old images and compress them, but how can I say "do this now
when it's convenient for me instead of waiting around until you get off your
lazy tookus and decide to tie up the system at 6pm just as my backups are
starting"...?

Thanks,
