Max mount of 50,000 for DLT?!?

The suggestion I've heard time and again is 100 max mounts, based on
"full-length writes". I've used 125 (assuming that some of my writes are
not full-length) for DLT-7000 and was feeling racy. Even some of the newer
hardcore, macho-enterprise-man stuff (e.g., STK 9940) is not rated for
50,000 mounts.
I've long suspected that the suggestion of 100 mounts was way on the
conservative side. But the value of the data is usually infinite compared
to the cost of the media, and I don't want to be the one who says "yeah, I
saved us fifty bucks on buying tapes but I lost your database, mister vice
president".

First, are you sure your are asking the right question, the expiration date
for tapes is usually when the physical tape will be no good anymore, approx
20 years. The expiration date in Device Manager has nothing to do with the
images written to the tape. Second, do you set expiration dates for your
tapes? By default tapes never expire.
One important thing to remember. You can think of Media Manager and
NetBackup as two separate products, along with Storage Migrator. Remember
Media Manager is actually used by both NBU and SM(HSM), and can be used with
scripts or third party software using tpreq and tpumount. So when you look
at something using the Media Manager GUI's or commands you are only looking
at information about the physical tape. The assigned column is actually set
by either NBU or HSM or the vmchange command if you want to do it yourself.
All the other columns are under control of MM, and therefore not relevant to
NBU, etc.
I hope I haven't been too longwinded, but I have seen this question come up
many times, and thought I would try to set the record straight for once.
I'm sure that anything that I have misstated will be brought my attention,
unceremoniously, very quickly. Hope fully to the complete list, so others
can learn from my mistakes.
