its not that i'm set on GUI, i'm plagued by inconsistency.
For example a bpmedialist -p shows me 2 less tapes than
the GUI does.  I invesitgate and see the two unlisted are 
unassigned tapes which is cool but i'd like to not have 
to toss between the two in order to manage the tapes.
I've have simular situations when dealing with restoring 
based on job id's that are no longer in the activity monitor.

Not a workaround per se (if you are set on GUI), but you can see the
expiration date using the bpmedialist command.
