Now that I have a new tape drive (Thanks to all who helped!) I have
started experimenting with this W2K Server.
Optimal settings depend on your specific configuration. You will need to
experiment.
We have a Compaq DL580 with an attached Compaq SDLT drive. As well as
being the sole master/media server, all data to be backed up, files and
Exchange stores, are located on this server. I have not modified
NET_BUFFER_SZ at all, since this is all direct attached. (Would this
parameter make a differnce in my case?)
Exchange stores are about 2.5 GB
The four directories hold about 92,500 files in about 45 GB.
TUNING IMPACT ON THROUGHPUT
SIZE NUMBER Files Exchange
Default Default 3911 3985
65536 Default 3911 4034
131072 Default FAILED - bptm log shows max for this drive is 64 kB
65536 32 5973 15915
65536 64 7994 15303
Tonight we shall see what happens with 128 buffers. I cannot express how
exited I was to see the 2.5 GB Exchange store backed up in under three
minutes - much less then 30 minutes with the old DLT setup (with default
parameters). Reducing the backup window from 9 hours to just over 2 has
more than justified the cost of this new hardware, and given me much
geeky pleasure. :)
