I have noticed similar behaviour, as well.  
There was a mention in one of the patches released in the last year (just can't 
remember which one....) of a bug that only occurred when 'collect TIR 
information' was turned on for the class. 
Turning off this option resolved this issue for me on NT4 servers-  have seen 
it as well on 2000 with no resolution.

I was going to try to switch to date modified, but it sounds like I need to
look at something else !
