Well there are two parts to making RMAN work with NetBackup. The actual
RMAN binaries are installed as part of the basic Oracle installation, with
the binaries being installed under $ORACLE_HOME like all the other Oracle
binaries.

With the basic installation of RMAN, you can perform disk-based backups and
backups to local tape devices.

In order to use RMAN with NetBackup, you need the NetBackup Agent for
Oracle. The installation of this agent depends upon what version of Oracle
and what O/S you are using. For some versions you simply need to link in a
new library file, and in some versions you need to relink your Oracle
binaries.

I believe the installation directory (on any client that the Oracle database
extension is installed) would be under /usr/openv/netbackup/dbext. To check
and see if the client is setup to use RMAN, you can look to see if the file
"libobk.so" under $ORACLE_HOME/lib (for Solaris) is actually a symbolic link
back to a file under /usr/openv/netbackup/bin. The file "libobk" has
different letters at the end depending on what OS you're using.

Quick one, how do I know if rman is installed as a separate thing for
Netbackup? I didn't install the Netbackup I am running currently. I don't
think it has rman installed but am not sure how to check.

Also where do I get rman from and how do I install it and do the Netbackup
side of things.

running Netbackup 3.2 on solaris 8. I have oracle clients and currently the
dbas are running hot_archive scripts and I backup the files produced from
them.

Thanks

Dave
