I do not know if this behavior is typical of the 9840 dirves, but we
achieved better results on backups and restores by setting the Maxiamum
Fragment Size to 2000. We did not change the buffer size.

Subject: [Veritas-bu] Storage Tek Drives

The drives: 9840a's and b's

A client installed a new media server, ran some test backups and was
disappointed with the results. We looked at how it was configured and I
mentioned that he may want to increase the buffer size to 256K. They did,
but now can't restore the data from the previous backups that were done at
the default block size.

I am almost positive I have had customers tweak this value up and down
without sacraficing their abilities to do restores (DLT mostly).

Is this typical of the 9840 drives?

If so, my alternative plan is going to be to

1. duplicate the images from the new media server to the master server.
2. bpexpdate images on the new server
3. duplicate these images on the master to meet their DR level.

is there a better idea?

David

That's a good thing.

The reason I wanted you to run that was to make sure that what
available_media is returning is accurate.

The fact that it can't find it in your server's mediaDB means that this
does
not contain any valid images...that's part one.

now do this

vmquery -m DLE392 -bx | tail +4 | awk '{print $12}'

if it returns "---" then that confirms that it is not assigned in your
MediaManager DB

HOWEVER if it comes back with a date, then it hasn't been deassigned yet
from volDB.

What the heck is this about?

bpmedialist -ev DLE392
requested media id was not found in NB media database and/or MM volume
database

DLE392 is listed as AVAILABLE and TLD when I run available_media.

Still a mystery. I've looked at the bptm log too and here's what is
shows:

14:11:54 [18063] <2> add_to_vmhost_list: added sdcnbu01 to vmhost list

14:11:55 [18063] <2> bptm: EXITING with status 96 <----------

This means squat to me. I think it might be time to call support....
