I'm not knocking the STK I was just stating that in my environment and
with cash constraints it made more sense for us to go with the Scalar.

but thank you for your unbiased opinion :)

The STK L180 is the smallest of large libraries
with the L700e expanding to 1379 tape slots and the L5500 going to
6000 slots. STK's ability to have mixed media and drives and
with the use of ASCLS the library can become host several backup packages
or several different OS's. That is what you would call expandability,
sensable TCO and ROI. The library management software with SMNP traps and
monitoring for Tivoli, ArcServe and HP OpenView makes notification easy
and responisble especially when you call the 1.800 number you have more
specific information to get faster results from the in-town parts depot

after some issues at the beginning the scalar 1K LTO has turned out to be
rock solid. I have had two units for the past year it took about 5
months but after the last round of firmware upgrades from IBM for the
drives, the units have not failed once. we also looked at the STK 180 but
the price/expandability was not as attractive as the scalar's.

ADIC's support has been nothing but terrific we have 4X24X7 support and
over new years I had a drive fail it was replaced in 3 hours, from the
time I opened the ticket.

Hi everyone,

We are currently looking to purchase a new tape library. We have narrowed
it down to a Storage Tek L180, ADIC Scalar 1000, and Quantum M2500. IBM has
been in contact with us as well. From my understanding ADIC is the
manufacturer of the IBM libraries. I want to avoid paying a premium for
someone's logo on a library manufactured by another. I would like to get
your thoughts about these libraries if you have the time/patience to reply
to such a request. We are interested in durability/reliability of the
robotics and the library in general as well as service/support. We are
also considering moving towards LTO instead of Super DLT. We have been
informed that superdlt is currently going through some growing pains that
LTO has already went through for the most part. We are currently using a
Sun ETL/1000 with four DLT7000 drives. We are very impressed with the STK's
ability to have mixed media and drives in the same library. We would like
to keep one DLT drive around for restore purposes. Thanks in advance for
any comments or suggestions.
