No it doesn't automatically erase data on a tape when you remove a file.
Read about the migcons command on how to free up deleted files from
secondary storage.

Q: In HSM 3.4.1, using tape 'ct' method for migration, if we delete a file 
in the hsm managed filesystem, does it also delete the complete data from 
the volume (media used)? if it does so, then why doesn't volume size 
changes/reduces? how to clear it then?
