I am glad this was brought up as I am in the process of documenting changes
I was planning to make to our environment. I currently have 1 server that
acts as a Master and media server. I was planning on adding a new souped up
server and making it the master while changing the current server to be just
a media manager. As part of the plan they would have both been given new
hostnames and taken out of their current domain and placed in a separate
domain.

I now know this will be a nightmare to do so I will keep the current
hostname. I will still have to bring it out of the domain but I don't think
that will be a problem. What I am wondering is which server should keep the
current server name. Should I leave it with the new master or what will
become just the media manager?

Any ideas would be appreciated.

Yes. I agree...I've done literally dozens of these and keeping the hostname
is a good idea....it gets real tricky otherwise.

I would also suggest that you completely understand the differences between
the media and master servers, what dbs each function owns and why. I'd
review very closely the functional overview in Appendix A of the
troubleshooting guide (I think its still there...if not check the admin
guide).

Thirded, 2 colo moves in under 2 months(consolidation moves:)), first
one was a move and name change....name got changed right back, and
everything else got CNAME'd...Try explaining that to the PM who is
'in charge' of the move...:) t
