When you use the -altreadhost option with bpduplicate, you are reading from
the tape with a different media server than wrote it (similar to doing an
alternate server restore).

The destination Storage Unit that is defined for the duplicate will be the one
that will write the second copy. The media server associated with this
Storage Unit will use a piece of media (tape) that it "owns" or that is
"assigned" to it, therefore in your environment any duplicates will be on
tapes assigned to the master.

When a restore is done, it will occur on the same media server that wrote the
backup (or in this case, wrote the duplicate) because that is the media server
that the tape is assigned to (unless you tell it otherwise).

What you are seeing is the way it should work.

If you want to restore data from this tape using a different media server than
the one that wrote it (i.e. the media server that wrote the original copy),
then you have to do an alternate server restore, or what is also called a
"server independent restore". More info in the NBU admin guide.

media host override, which is what most people have mentioned, would cause
restores for ALL tapes assigned to your media server to go through your
master. You mentioned that this is not what you want. Another option in your
case is to use...

bpmedia -movedb -ev TAPE -newserver MEDIA_SERVER -oldserver MASTER

... for any tapes containing the duplicated backups from your media server
(that were done on the master). The only problem with this is that these
tapes could have backups from your master or duplicates that were done on your
master (of tapes either from your master or your media server). You'll have
to use multiple volume pools to make sure that you are only moving things you
want to move (e.g. NetBackup, NetBackup_master_dups, NetBackup_media_dups) and
modify your dups for the media server to include -dp NetBackup_media_dups.
Then use the bpmedia command above on the tapes in this NetBackup_media_dups
pool to move their "assignment" from the master to the media server.

I am running NBU 3.2 with vault 3.4. This is an SSO environment
and
both master and media server are seeing the same library. My master server is
running the dup for itself and the media server with the ALTREADHOST option.
It works fine up until the point I need to restore from the duplicated tape.
During the restore for the media server it uses the master server to load and
read the tape, rather then media server. When I restore from the original it
loads and restores on media server. So it must be the duplication that
affects
the process. Has anyone seen this before?
