Subject: [Veritas-bu] RE: Netback for Oracle, Hotbackup script causing multiple backups
From: cmanuel AT diadexus DOT com (Chester Manuel)

Hi Everyone,

I have Netbackup 3.4 for Oracle. I was using the hotbackup script and
scheduled the BackupPolicy to run Monday thru Thursday from 12am for a
duration of 24 hours. I have an automatic backup scheduled to run once a
week from Monday thru Thursday from 6pm for a duration of 12 hours. The
maximum MPX per drive is set to 1. When it runs it takes 8 hours for the
hotbackup to finish. A couple of seconds after it finishes another
hotbackup runs. When that is done another runs a couple of seconds after.
This events happens only for the hotbackup. Is there something wrong with
my scheduling? Is this a bug? If so what patch is available? Any insight
would be truly appreciated.

Thanks,

Chester Manuel

Install an administration console on some Windows NT machine,
add this machine in the SERVER list of your machines (or at least
in SERVER list of the master and your Exchange client), and
lauch the Configure tool on this administration machine.

Jason:

Veritas doesn't provide an easy way to do this. However, it is a fairly
trivial exercise
using NBUX.

If you can tell me exactly which fields from the GUI you would like to see
on your terminal,
I'll write a quick top-like utility to show you that information from your
terminal window.

You can also edit the registry on the Exchange client directly (in this
case, "VeritasExchService" is the mailbox alias for the NBU Exchange service
account)

Add a new string value to the following key:
HKEY_Local_Machine/Software/Veritas/NetBackup/CurrentVersion/Config
Value Name: "EXCHANGE_MAILBOX" (must be all caps)
   String Value: "VeritasExchService"

The following reg hack was also recommended by Veritas (I don't know the
source):

Change (increase) the value of the following parameter to 100c (hex) or 4108
(decimal):
HKEY_Local_Machine/Software/Veritas/NetBackup/CurrentVersion/Config/Clear_Ar
chive_Bit_Incr_Wait
(A lower value causes the transaction log not to be truncated after a full
backup).

Cheers,
Neil

What type of drives?
We had a similar problem with Super DLT
drives. We initially received media read
errors and after two weeks of working on
the problem with Veritas discovered that
we had a typo in the st.conf file. After
fixing that problem we suddenly started
getting this error "image not in tar format"
when trying to restore images written before
implementing the fix.

The problem seemed to be enhanced by
changing the SIZE/NUMBER_DATA_BUFFERS.
Veritas says we are now SOL trying to read
a month's worth of backups.

That would be a good start. If it's trivial I can likely just take what I
get and modify as I think of other things I'd like.

Thanks

Why are you converting from OmniBack to NetBackup ?

We have to make the decision for OmniBack this month, because NetBackup is
awful expensive for us.
(And I think NetBackup hasnt any big advantage for our shop.)

Thomas
