I have noticed that the backup usually fails on something else (check your
logs or your problems report).  Then when it retries the backup, it sees
that it's beyond its window and fails on a 196.  It's some sort of a display
problem on the Job Monitor.  Is this the case with yours?

        What you are saying makes sense, except that in our environment I
have observed backups that exceeded the backup window and were still able to
mount new tapes.  For example, on the night of  December 20th/morning of
December 21st the tc1s0b server backup failed due to a media error and
restarted at 05:35hrs on the 21st. It's class's cumulative incremental
schedule is set to start at 21:00:00hrs on the Thursday(20th) night and has
a duration of 11 hours; it's window ends at 08:00:00hrs Friday(21st)
morning.  Here are some excerpts from the log file showing that the backup
continued to mount tapes until it completed at 11:29:00hrs:
