I would actually suggest backing up the .snapshot partition if you have
one.  This would give you a clean copy of the filesystem you are 
backing up.

I use NFS to back up snapshot partitions on the NetApps instead of NDMP
for reasons some may or may not agree with.  My experience has been 
that the NetApps don't seem to stream NFS well, but work better for 
burst.  After you blow through the cache, etc... I've tended to 
see a performance degredation.  Of course this depends on how you 
have the NetApps themselves configured, but a local dump is 
significantly faster than an NFS based backup.
