Good morning,

I recently ran out of disk space for my NFS mounted catalogs and moved them
from the Sun NFS server to the NetApp. This promptly caused the catalog
backups to go from taking a reasonable amount of time to never finishing. A
few tests confirmed that attempting to back up any NFS mounted partition
from the NetApp is insanely slow. A few details:

1) The tape library is attached to the NetApp and two drives are dedicated
to the NetApp and two are directly attached to the Sun server via SCSI.
2) NDMP backups of the NetApp run at normal speeds.
3) Client backups of other Suns and NT boxes through the Veritas server run
at normal speeds.
4) Other NFS mounted partitions do not exhibit this problem.
5) Reading and writing that partition with other tools - tar, for example -
works at expected speeds.

So there seems to be something unique about backing up an NFS mounted NetApp
partition. Any thoughts or pointers would be most welcome.

-David
