If he really, really wants to save $$, he can shut down his Exchange
Services every night and copy over the raw *.EDB files. But, that's a
secret (Ssshh!) budgeting trick used by IT people when the big brass
refuses
to hand over the money for a simple backup agent. ;^)
That does not work real well with Exchange. You would have to do circular
logging yuck.
Also, M$ recommends backing up exchange live because it does a minor type
of consistency
check on the DB pages as it backs it up.
IF he is running Windows2000, a messy alternative is to use
MS backup to back the files up to a file, and then use Netbackup to backup
the backup file.
