Setting the storage unit fragment size will speed up restores somewhat.
What you REALLY need is the FlashBackup add-on, which is a very nice
solution to your exact problem. (the Vision conference last year
included a very cool presentation about using FlashBackup to back up
human genome research data - *millions* of files comprising a few
gigabytes of space.)
So what you should do is call your Veritas sales rep and ask him when
FlashBackup will be released for HP-UX. (since LIH it's only available
for Solaris and Auspex)
