No, a partial backup is not done on the System State. That's not a NetBackup
thing... that's a Microsoft thing. According to MS, System State contains
items (system files, protected files, dlls, Registry, etc.) that must be
backed up together and restored together because of dependencies. Any backup
of the System State is a backup of the entire System State. Since things in
the System State, such as the Event Viewer, are always changing, the System
State is always getting a full backup whenever it's in the file list, whether
the clients backup is a full or an incremental.

Looking at the System State backup, you can see that there is probably more
there than really needs to be. I would like to see someone explain why
calc.exe or notepad.exe are considered "protected". You could change the list
of protected files... I believe this is configured somewhere in the Registry.
The other option is to exclude System_State:\ from incrementals. The only
thing to be concerned with this is that you then need to initiate a full
backup after any software has been installed or any system changes have been
made. Items in the System State do not get backed up elsewhere, so it is
required for a full restore.

Excludes are in the Registry and can be configured via the GUI in the admin
client or directly in the Registry.

As far as your original question about classes and incrementals, don't forget
about the archive bit on Windows based clients. This IS used to determine the
files to be backed up during an incremental, REGARDLESS OF CLASS. The only
caveat is that if an incremental runs on a class and sees that a full has
never been ran for that class, it will ignore the archive bit and back up
everything. Use of the archive bit can be turned off but brings up other
issues.

Thank you for your respones! Since the answer to this question is no then
my next question is, does net backup really do a "partial" backup on
system_state during cumulatives or differentials? I guess my real question
is , is there a way to make exceptions to the files backed up in the backup
classes?

Just out of curiosity, If I have 2 classes for a machine. The first class
is for doing full backup c:\, e:\, system_state, on win2000. I have another
class to back up just c:\, e:\ cumulative incremental. Will the master
server use the full backup information from class1 to determine what to hit
on the incrememtals on class2?
