With your combination of hardware and software you should be 
able to use AutoClean feature working on your library. I would recommend 
you to open a call with Veritas and find out why it doesn't work. 
Cleaning request without cleaning performed going away but coming back
shortly. If you don't clean tape drive you will loose tapes and 
backups speed eventually.
