And if you aren't sure you are ready for vault today 
(meaning that you would be in the future) you could 
take a look at my duplication scripts which has a 
section in there where it creates a nbu db tape for 
offsite purposes.

Vault does a much better job of tracking which tape you 
used for the db backup.  I'm in the process of 
deploying my scripts at another client and I'll be 
updating the nbu db backup section to properly track 
the tapes it uses, etc.
