I believe this is true. Let me tell you what I know and how I know it.

I have a field engineer for Quantum/ATL that kinda gave me some insight on DLT 
tapes. The two manufacturers are Fuji and Maxell. You can tell who made your 
tape by flipping it over and looking at the numbers on the back. Listed below 
are two examples taken from actual tapes that I own:

Tape#1
333518
MA913F240      55

The 'F' in the second set of numbers indicates Fuji is the provider of the 
media to the manufacturer (Quantum, Compaq, or whatever)

Tape#2
444027
SH003M4916   76

The 'M' in the second number indicates this media was provided by Maxell.

I have not seen anything in print that proves (or disproves this). If anyone 
else on the list is in the know and would care to enlighten the rest of us, we 
look forward to hearing from you. Perhaps someone can tell us what the rest of 
the numbers on the back mean.

Does anyone remember a discussion a while back on how there were really 
only two manufacturers of DLT media in the world, and that everyone else 
used those two and repackaged them?  There were allegedly some markings on 
the tape which would tell you which of the two your vendor uses.

1. Is this true?
2. Do you know of any source that can verify this?
3. Who are those two companies?
4. What are the markings?
