No, but I also know this is not the problem as it's been working fine for
weeks and nothing has changed.. Just suddenly this one client (out of 17)
tells me that vmd wasn't running. I wouldn't want to share multiple
retentions on the same media anyway here...

Very strange! do you have the following setup in the bp.conf file?
ALLOW_MULTIPLE_RETENTIONS_PER_MEDIA
