There have already been a few answers to this, but if you're using 3.4, why
not just use vmupdate. Write a little script around it if you want that way
you don't have to remember the full syntax or type it in every time. It works
great and it's so simple.

vmupdate can be used to update the inventory if the tapes were added manually
or if the library auto-loaded the tapes when the CAP was closed.

It can also be used to empty the CAP with the -empty_ie option. It will check
the CAP, empty the slots if any tapes exist, place the tapes into available
slots in the library, and then update the inventory. And unlike the library
auto-loading the tapes itself, I have never had a problem where the tape is
put into a slot that is empty but is assigned within NetBackup to one of the
tapes that is currently mounted in a drive.

To use vmupdate, no configuration changes are needed to the conf files (like
the tech note that was mentioned for another method).

If you use vmupdate with the -empty_ie option to load tapes into your library
and you use vmchange with the -res -e options to unload them, you should never
have a time when the library's database and Media Manager's database are
different.

Hi,

Does anybody know how to get the volume databse in NetBackup to update as
soon as the tapes are entered into the libary?

The problem I am having is that every week I have to go into NetBackup and
update the inventory.

I don't mind doing this but when I am away it doesn't get done so I end up
using all my scratch tapes.

Is there a script about that can do this?

Thanks for any help in advance,

Colin.
