It's hardly a matter of right or wrong and it was only during the transition.
Being able to go from a 3.4 client to a 3.2 server allows support of all clients
during the transition since the documentation claimed that the 3.4 server
required that the NT client either be upgraded to 3.4 or at an appropriate patch
level.    Granted it's not always necessary to plan your transition with
workable interim states but it's nice to take a break for little things like
sleep during major transitions.   Fortunately, we did not require that interim
state but we tested for it nonetheless.

I hate to state the obvious, but going forward versions is always wrong,
even with the NetWare client which is a lot more forgiving about version
numbers. You'd be hard pressed to get support on a setup like that and
results are not guaranteed.
