Terry,
        What I use is the (Solaris) command:

        # iostat -x 5

to display the machine's I/O status every 5 seconds (ignore the first
output as it contains garbage info). This gives you
a good "first look" as to whether or not drives are active, being
streamed to or in "stop/start mode" etc ...
