I had a similar problem, but it was even weirder in a way. Backups
and restores were fine, but duplication started getting positioning errors
after having worked fine for several months. The answer turneed out to be
the end of a sequence of strings in the st.conf. Ours were specific to our
drives, which are different from yours. So you need to find out the right
strings for your drives.

There was a line in st.conf for our drives which was something
like---I'm going from memory so DO NOT use this as authoritative:

 . . . 2, 0x00, 0x42, 1 (The dots stand in place of the beginning of the
line)

        had to be replaced with
        1, 0x00

The first one said: "There are 2 densities, 0x00 and 0x42. The first is
density #0 and the second is density #1. Use density #1 as the default."
Density #1 was 0x42.

The replacement said: "There is only one density, namely 0x00."

Call Veritas and find out what the st.conf lines for your drive are.
Hope that helps! Good luck!

                                        Mike

We are using a media server (Solaris 7) running Netbackup 3.2,
we keep getting status code 86 on the tape drives. We are using
Sun L280 stackers and L1800 tape library and we also tried the
tape drives on a STK 9710 and got the same error on one of the
tape drives. It seems to be Solaris related and can't pinpoint
where the problem is. Does anyone had the problem before and any
solutions to the problems? Thanks.
