I had someone pose the question of how to improve backups from the client
workstation.

In this situation the tape library and drives are fast. The network could
be improved, but they say that the network is not the bottleneck. They also
say that when they compress from the client that the cpu resources to
compress on the client makes the backup just as slow. In their case they
are using Legato.

They wondered how netbackup could help. I thought there were parameters
that you could set to change the size of data sent, or try to buffer data
sent? They, like everyone, say that money will not be spent any time soon
to improve hardware such as the clients, network, or Tape libraries. In
their case they believe that the workstation cannot push the data fast
enough to the backup server.

My initial reaction was with better network bandwidth, but like I said, they
do not have it in their budget.

What would anyone recommend for increasing backup performance when the
client appears to be the bottleneck?

Thanks,
Dan
