A nice trick to check daemon / service status of any client:

telnet <client_name> bpcd

connection refuses if daemon is not running.

Thanks Lee,

I too am a UNIX NB guy with NT clients but I get what you're saying. I have
stopped and re-started the NetBackup Service but that has had no effect. I
posted an update regarding security issues associated with available ports
outside the firewall (that's where the problem server lives) and hope to
receive input back from that.

Dennis,

Personally my oppinion on a STATUS-54 for an NT client
means that you may to need to restart the BPCD services on
that client. This is an NT service type of thing that gets
set up when you install NB on that client. Sorry for the
bad lingo, I'm a NB UNIX guy but I do have NT clients.
Try stopping and restarting the BPCD service on the NT client
then rerun the backup. NB server is talking to your client
but your client is not listening or responding. Hope this helps.

everything on the network appears to be in order. I can ping to the client
from the NBU server and I can ping from the NBU server to the client. When I
start the backup though, it times out after one minute attempting to
connect. Haven't opened an incident yet ... thought I'd run it by the group
first. I am seeing some interesting things in the logs.

recourse is to un-install the client agent and re-install it. I'm awaiting
information from the server owner to see what (if anything) has been done to
this server within the last week and a half.
