Subject: [Veritas-bu] tape eject after backup

Admins,
This is my first mail to the list and I hope you won't disappoint
me.
I have couple of questions .

1)To make my life easier, I am loading the tapes into the library as per the
barcodes i.e tape1 goes to slot1, tape2 to slot2. Am I doing something wrong
?
[Skip] You do not have to track the tapes by slot in order. The software
knows what tape is where. It is now wrong, just more time consuming. You can
use the GUI or command line to browse the media lists and find what tapes
need to come out and then eject them and it does not matter what slot they
were in.

2)I am keeping a retension period of one week and I have added eight tapes
for
each volume pool(as some of my backups goes to one tape). Is this the
correct
procedure ?
[Skip] How big is the library? Are you sure you will only need eight tapes
per pool? Have you created a scratch pool? I would create a scratch pool
which will allow you to pull tapes from this pool when they are needed for
the other pools that you have created. A scratch pool is created by adding
the line SCRATCH_POOL = Scratch to the /usr/openv/volmgr/vm.conf file (if
you are on Unix).
Once a tape is used (pulled from the scratch pool) it does not go back
automatically. If you are putting tapes that are now blank back in and you
want them to go to the scratch pool then you will have to simply do a change
through the GUI and move them to the scratch pool.
You can keep them in the other pool if you want. The theory is something
like, if you have two tapes being used and it grabs a third, then it will
always need the third because of incremental growth.

3)Before I start the backup , I had to do some preprocessing. So most of the
backups are done through Cron. Here what I want to do is to eject the tape
out
of the tape drive to the outport. How do I achieve this ? For some backups
I
had created two streams. Is that possible to eject two tapes to the outport
once the backup is finished?

[Skip] If you have a big enough export cap you can do multiple ejects to
the cap.

4)For loading the tapes back into the library, I am using the GUI. I know
that
this can be done through scripts. Can I able to control the tapes like which
tape should go to which slot i.e tape to slot1 etc.. ?

[Skip] You should be able to identify the specific slot for on site or off
site with the command line. Depending on what you are calling in your script
will depend on how you do it.

Skip

I appreciate y'r help.

I will summarize
