When we sat down with the enterprise architects from Veritas to plan our 
installation, I asked this same (layout) question. Their answer is not to do 
it. If the link goes down (and they all do), no backups will run, due to the 
master and slave not communicating. They suggested GDM, which is actually not 
very expensive at all.
