I would be careful with it, especially if you have hardware support
contract for the library. Self made barcodes is something that your H/W
support might be happy to blame when you have H/W problems.

We have an STK 9710 library, with 4 drives that once in a while go down,
and almost 600 tapes. I am very grateful that I bought the barcodes from
the same company who sold me the library. I'm sure I saved myself a lot
of aggravation by it. Our H/W provider once replaced all our barcodes at
their expense, since they received a warning from STK that the previous
barcodes they sold might cause problems.
