Of course older NW clients will work in general with the latest NW software, 
even if these combinations are not supported (any more). For compatibility 
reasons with the OS or for other reasons, it might be impossible to update them 
at all or to the latest version. See the Compatibility Guides for details - and 
download them every month - as EMC does not keep the legacy ones.

'Very' old NW clients are not even capable to be updated remotely via the 
client push (CP) method. You must update them locally.
 
Also, you must update them locally if you install hotfix versions - CP can only 
detect differences of the Service Pack versions (2nd number). NW 8.0+ also can 
detect changes of the 3rd number (not verified yet, as such does not exist 
yet). That is why on these NW/Windows clients you can not even 'update' them at 
all (the installation routine will not suggest 'update') - you must use the 
legacy method (de-install the old version before you install the new one).

Do not forget the problem i mentioned earlier - if you update from 7.4 to 7.6 
(and maybe other versions), the new client will not start with the old resource 
files.
