you obviously forgot DSA (Data Service Agent). With DSA, NW converts the NDMP 
data format to NW's OTF format.

Consequently, you can
  - backup NDMP to any 'normal' SN
  - backup to any 'normal' NW media (even AFTD)
  - mix NDMP and normal OTF backups on the same media
  - even scan NDMP backups 

A lot of customers use it because 
  - it is easy to handle
  - and it is for free!
