As (relatively) recently as 7.5.1, it was not the default, at least:

    # nsrmm -o readonly 001840
    Mark sdlt320 tape 001840 as readonly? n

Then again, it might vary depending on the operation. However, I've long 
been in the habit of typing 'nsrmm -yo <whatever> ... ' :-)
