For a short while we ran with a 7.6.2 networker server and 7.6.0 vcb proxy.
You can still use vcb in this state. Once you upgrade the proxy to 7.6.2 I
read you have to use vadp. I didn't test to see if vcb would still work
though. I went to vadp.

When we went to data domain, in order to use boost on the storage nodes, you
have to run 7.6.2. So I had a lot of stuff I had to test in a short amount of
time and since I had several vcb servers and didn't upgrade all of them at
once. So I upgraded one at a time and tested vadp backups.

Before you upgrade you will want to give your vcb user account the additional
permissions in vcenter that it needs to use vadp, or create a new vadp user. I
just gave the additional permissions to the vcb account and continued to use it
for vadp. That starts on page 28 of the "EMC Networker vmware integration
guide".

Also in the integration guide it mentions running the nsrvadpserv_tool on the
networker server that updates the virtual clients to use vadp. I didn't run
this tool because all of my vcb servers weren't upgraded. I ran a script
against the vadp group (using nsradmin) that upgrades the client's properties
(the backup command, application information, and proxy backup). That way when
I upgraded the proxy, I could upgrade the corresponding group to vadp. The
easiest way to go would be to use the nsrvadpserv_tool though, I kinda
"kludged" my upgrade.. :)

You may want to have a look at the "EMC Networker vmware integration guide"
before starting though, there's a lot of good info in it.

Thanks..

I haven't been checking the listserv lately so forgive me if this is a repeat
question.

We are currently on 7.5.3.2 and will be upgrading to 7.6.2. We currently are
using VMWare VCB backups for our virtuals. We have a proxy server for the VCB
backups of the virtuals (the server where VMWare takes the servers and breaks
them down into files, where Networker then backs up the files from)

In reading the docs for Networker 7.6.2 and the chance to VADP, it states that
version 7.6.2 will still support VCB backups with a 7.6.1 proxy node. It
appears you can continue using VCB as long as you don't upgrade the proxy
storage node to 7.6.2. If you want to "convert" to using VADP on the proxy
storage node, you have to run a process that will convert your clients to the
new VDAP process. I assume that that process make it impossible to "go back"
to using VCB once you do that.

Has anyone using VBC already done the upgrade to 7.6.2 and done the VADP
"conversion"? Just wondering how that was done..if you still continued to use
VCB with a 7.6.1 proxy storage node for a while or just went "whole hog" and
did the conversion at the same time. Looking for any insights before we bite
the bullet.

Kevin

Are you re-installing the OS, or just installing a new version of NW? When you
uninstall NW,
it doesn't delete the /nsr directory, so all the history remains. I've never
had a problem
with uninstalling the previous version of NW and then installing the new
version. In July, I upgraded from 7.5.4 to 7.6.2 (on 64-bit Linux) by
uninstalling the older version and installing the newer version.
