[Networker] Supported NDMP devices

I understand there is a hardware compatibility list, but I still need to ask
the question. I have a Pillar Data Storage NAS that has NDMP capability. One
would think that this is a well-defined protocol that is not dependent on
hardware compatibility. In our recent maintenance purchasing exercise, I'd
inquired about adding the NDMP license to our pool only to be informed that our
NAS is not supported. So, the question, why does the hardware need to be
"supported" when the dialog should be via a well-defined protocol?
Secondarily, other than backing up the mounted filesystems from a networker
client, is there any other recommended backup methodology that is more
efficient?
