We need to design a policy for tapes replacement.
At the web I founded a recomendation for LTO4 media.
It must be replaced after 250 full backups.

So My idea it's to use the "recycled" counter as a limit (250) to mark a tape
ready for replacement.

Is it correct, please what do you think about IT?

I think you don't need to bother. Even if you write each tape every month, 250 is over 20 years. By that time you will probably replace your drives (and therefore your media) at least three times. In 1998 we replaced our aging Exabyte library with a new StorageTek DLT7000 library. Since then we switch to DLT8000, LTO-2, LTO-3 and LTO-4. That is less than four years per media generation. Even if you replace drives twice (every eight years), you will probably never have to deal with tapes replacements.

On a side note, I don't recall having a media failure (maybe on DLT we had some). But then again, all my tapes are always in the library, protected from dust and temperature changes and I also try to make sure all tapes go thermal conditioning before I use them.

Thank you very much!
