I did a migration such a way from 744 to 7523, from a W2000
to W2008R2/64bits. Smooth.

In correct Marcel's procedure, you have to take care of res,
mm and index subdirs only from your nsr main repository :
if you did not install same nsr version on both nodes, copying
entire nsr dir from old to new platform, will result in old
version on new host, nsr binaries being under same nsr directory.

To avoid that, stop nsr services on both nodes, and save res,
mm and index on new platform. Then copy only networker config (res)
media db (mm) and client file indexes (index) from old to new.
Restart on new.
If all is ok, then you have 15 days to authorize.
(a good tip : simulate it (copy without index subdir),
note the new hostid, then process new authentication with EMC.
When you get all codes, plan real migration)

If your disk is san based, you can also migrate faster : unmap from
a side, map to the new platform with same drive letter.
You have here to keep same version on both platform in a
first step then upgrade to a newer networker release and
then reauthenticate. But in this case, no direct rollback.

PS : A second good tip : when nsr is stopped, zip your res
and media db directories just in case of prob during upgrade process.

Good luck

Hi,
Install networker on your windows 2008, stop networker services,
rename the dir nsr nsr.org,
copy your dir nsr from \\win2003server to \\win2008server,
stop networker services on your win2003 (license issue),
and restart networker on the win2008, and see what has been done.
Normaly you'll have anything you need, then when your happy, ask for the new
licenses code for the new servers (15 days).

If not happy you can go back to your old server the same day. By stopping
the services on the 2008 and restarting on the 2003

Objet : New server, new Networker version

We are in the process of upgrading our backup system. First of all our
system is small. We don't have any storage nodes and only backup 18 systems
in all for a total of about 2.5 TB/week.

The old system is Networker 7.5.1 on Windows 2003 R2 with an AIT-4 tape
library.

The new system on a different server will be Networker 7.6.1 on Windows 2008
R2 (64 bit) with a new LTO-4 library.

I'm not particularly concerned with copying most of the setup from the old
server but I would like to preserve continuity in the Clients and Client
ID's and I would like to copy the directives from the old backup server. I
think the rest of it will be easy enough to recreate manually. Is there any
way to copy those parts easily, especially the Client ID's? Keep in mind I
can only do a network copy, not a restore from a backup to the new server.

Eventually we will attach the old AIT-4 library to the new server as well
and move archived (not real NetWorker Archives though) to the LTO-4 format.
Any advice there?

If anyone has any advice to offer on this or anything else that may apply
please feel free to offer it. The big switchover will be this Friday.

Thanks,
Dave
