...something I've wondered, too. nsrjb -HE maybe?

In the NMC online help, I found the following verbiage which, while not 
specifically about that option, seems to support my idea:

"If the disabled drive is part of a library, it
might be necessary to reset the device. To do this:
>From the command prompt, change the path to the 
directory that contains the Sun StorageTek EBS binaries. 
Type this command: 
 
nsrjb -HE"
