When you do a restore it reports an estimate of how much space the restore will
require. Is that estimate based on the compressed size or uncompressed size?
I have always thought the uncompressed size but have never looked at it closely
to figure that out.

It does send the size of the saveset back to the server, this size is
the size AFTER it is compressed on the client side before it gets sent
back to the backup server, not the original data source size. A 50 GB
partition that holds 30 GB of data (native), may compress down to 20 GB
before being sent back to the server, so the save-set gets reported as
being 20 GB, but when restored, it will expand back to the original 30
when it gets uncompressed at the client. The compression is intended to
save backup media space(tape), but causes the original data source size
to get lost in the process.... The fact that the original partition
held 30 GB of data is lost and not recorded anyplace by Networker. Since
they never designed the database to accommodate these two values, it
will require a new database design / conversion if EMC thinks it is
warranted and/or enough customers request it, otherwise I would not
expect to see it anytime soon...
