So I seem to have figured out *what* but not *why* ... when I turned off 
the Win XP firewall completely, my backup of the NMC worked perfectly. But 
what I don't understand is that I set up an exception for TCP/UDP 2638 
(which is the port for the NMC backup, I thought). But apparently not ...

I'd rather not have the firewall completely turned off. Leaving it on 
allows a regular filesystem backup to work, but not a NMC backup. I 
haven't found any docs as to what ports to open in an XP firewall to allow 
the NMC backup; can anyone point me in the right direction?
