Have you considered the possibility of using sshfs, so your remote
file system can become a part of your backup-server or some other
local client? - Tunneling Networker through ssh is not a task I would
recommend... at least not if you wan't to preserve your sanity :)

feel like if someone got this to work they put many nights into it

can't afford that amount of effort, so please share if you've gotten
it to
work, no matter how convoluted.
