There is a presentation on exactly this topic slated for the July 14
NetWorker User Group meeting in New York. To register for the
conference, please go to

The principal advantage of using Avamar with NetWorker is basic
NetWorker procedures don't have to change. If you have a large body of
NetWorker-oriented documentation and operators familiar with NetWorker,
they don't have to change anything when you introduce Avamar. At this
point, the only thing for which you need the Avamar interface is setting
up replication. Other than that, NetWorker handles pretty much the whole
shebang, and even that is on the NetWorker roadmap (which is another
topic of the User Group meeting -- this is the last subtle pitch, I
promise).

Monitoring is another plus. If an Avamar component failure causes
backups to fail, you get your standard NetWorker reports via EBA, NMC or
scripting.

And finally, don't discount using NetWorker with Avamar because of
licensing concerns before you speak with your EMC sales team. They may
be willing to make some licensing adjustments to assure that they don't
"double dip" and make you pay twice for the same backups. YMMV here.

I can't answer your question, but I do have a subsidiary question. We
are
thinking of getting an Avamar device here. What is the advantage of
tying it
into NetWorker, as apposed to using it standalone and using just the
Avamar
agent on each client? From my perspective, if we use Avamar without
NetWorker, we can save a lot on annual maintenance because the Avamar
agents
are free.
