The Data Domain systems do not support writing directly to tape
devices.
So, in order to create a tape copy of a backup on the central site DD
system, the data will need to be read from the DD system into a
NetWorker storage node and then written by a storage node to the tape
device.
I was under the impression that (some?) DD systems can actually
replicate to other DD systems transparently without third-party
software. You go into the DD config and say "send the data to this
other DD unit".
This helps in that you only send non-duped data to the other DD unit.
With a NetWorker clone, you would stream the entire save set's data--
including blocks that are already on the central DD unit. You would
save on time and bandwidth by having the DDs only send the de-duped
stream.
Is this a correct assessment of the DD functionality? If so, would you
tell NetWorker about the second copy of data that the DD units sent
over on their own?
