Got it all figured out, me thinks :)
The registry to disable the vss for exchange worked like a charm.
And then the ()#&%)#/%& pix firewall had a timeout, which we raised from 1
hour to 5 hours. Why the 1 hours gave me a 2 hour window, I dont really
know, but it helped :)
I think these 2 settings amount to the the same thing, but doing it at the
firewall level, was a better choice
Environment variable NSR_KEEP_ALIVE=15
Registry
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\Tcpip\Parameters\keepalivetime
= 300000
and now onwards to the SQL, databases :)

Hi Kenneth,
I haved for several months ago exactly the same problem with my Windows
server 2008 and Exchange 2007 and this key help to disable the VSS support
in Exchange IS service. The VSS feature isn´t yet mature enough to be used
with Exchange DB. I could imagine the same problem is with SQL-server.
Regarding your Exchange timeout problem, sometime Networker will give you
more log/error messages when you do a Exchange backup manually with
"NetWorker User for Exchange Server" program.

Did the trick, found it in a kb for enableing VSS on microsoft small
buissiness server.
Just annoying the EMC doesnt mention this anywhere in thier admin guides.
I guess something similar will have to be done on the various SQL2005
servers too :) Would be nice if they could make it part of the networker
module for exchange/sql server install, like they have made the firewall
config part of the regular client install :)
But now my savet set MSEXCH:IS fails after 120 minutes, every time... the
group inactivty timeout is set to 240 mins.
If I run MSEXCH:IS/first storage group/mailbox store and MSEXCH:IS/first
storage group/public folder store seperatly they run fine !
The error I get is this in the windows event log Information Store (9064)
First Storage Group: The backup has been stopped because it was halted by
the client or the connection with the client failed.
And this from networker exchange log

Disable vss and see how it responds. Have you checked the applogs and the
