EMC does not per-say 'make' Networker - They purchased it.... And now
own it....

Being the data storage company that they are... They wanted to have the
backup product that had the lions share of the backup market, so they
bought the biggest player in the field: Networker

Before that, they had a product call EDM (Enterprise Data Manager),
which was originally a product called Epoch Backup (don't know the
history of EB tho...) Much of the module names and internal names for
EDM still carried the EB nomenclature and terms in them... We ran it for
a few years, it wasn't bad. It did some things better than Networker,
like backing up EMC symmetrix hosted data without any network path if
you had a fast-wide SCSI connection from the symmetrix to the backup
server with a tape library attached. No-one else could backup symmetrix
data faster because of it. It ran on Solaris only as far as I know...

They did the same thing with smaller NAS/raid storage systems a few
years back when they purchased Data General, who had invented/created
the Celerra NAS, which had that smaller end market pretty much to
itself.... The only thing that's left of Data General now is their NAS
storage system that EMC now owns and markets... EMC wants to provide all
things storage related in the enterprise, or at least be able to offer
solutions regardless of which end of the scale you are at, small or
large.

I've read the advantage of Networker is that it scales better in larger
environments than other products tend to... Which is a good strength to
have in the storage business.
