Not true. I understand VCB can live on a Virtual Machine , although I
admit I would not know how that would work (anyone doing this?)

It's up to you - It can be your networker server, or it can reside on
another server - as long as it has SAN visibility to the ESX datastores,
and is configured as a storage node in NW...
