Comparing the scripts between my two distributions I notice a number of things. 
 

The script that may be causing the problem has a line that starts:  
log_daemon_msg "Starting MySQL database server"  "mysqld" 

On the client that doesn't have this info dumped at the console, it states:  
echo -n "Starting MySQL database server:  mysqld" 

Could this be the problem?  Not sure what log_daemon_msg is all about.
