Just a follow-up for the archives...

I spent some time on the issue I was running into (which is slightly
different than what the original poster was seeing, though the Java stack
trace is the same), and was able to find a workaround.

At least on Solaris 10 x86_64, the java that's available as part of Sun's
automatic update procedure is 1.5.0_16.  For whatever reason, that version
doesn't work with NMC, at least on Solaris.

By using the jdk 1.6.0_7 distribution, downloaded manually from
java.sun.com, and then configuring firefox 3.0.1 to use that java plug-in
and specifying that version of the java web start (javaws) binary, I was
able to get NMC to display and work on my workstation again.
